Equipment

  • Oven
  • Large skillet
  • Baking sheet
  • Cutting board
  • Chef’s knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • Cornmeal for dusting
  • All-purpose flour for dusting
  • 1 lb refrigerated pizza dough at room temperature
  • 8 oz lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 oz extra-sharp Cheddar coarsely grated (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1 head butter lettuce torn
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes quartered
  • 1/2 small red onion thinly sliced
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • Kosher salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Dust a baking sheet with cornmeal. On a lightly floured surface, stretch or roll the pizza dough into a 14- to 16-inch oval. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the barbecue sauce.
  • Spoon the beef mixture over the prepared dough and sprinkle evenly with grated Cheddar.
  • Bake until the crust is golden brown and crisp, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • While pizza bakes, toss together the lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and red onion with olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a large bowl.
  • Top the baked pizza with the salad mixture. Slice and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Customize the salad with your favorite burger toppings—try pickles, relish, or roasted mushrooms.
  • Let the dough sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to stretch.
  • Use a pizza stone for an even crispier crust if available.
  • This pizza is best served fresh—the salad topping keeps it light and crunchy.
  • Swap barbecue sauce for ketchup-mayo for a more classic burger flavor twist.
